Romo Fabrics and Zero Textile Waste: Viscose vs Polyester, Waterproof Upholstery, and What Designers Miss

Four thirty on a Thursday. A designer I'd worked with twice before called about a 120-yard order for a hotel lobby. The opening was in five days. The spec sheet said 100% polyester waterproof fabric and zero textile waste.

The designer meant well. She wanted a durable material for banquettes, plus a sustainability talking point. But the two requests pulled in opposite directions. A coated waterproof polyester can be a good choice for humid outdoor seating. It is not automatically a “zero waste” choice. I had to talk her through what that phrase actually means before we could move forward.

But zero textile waste is not a property of a single fabric. It's a systems outcome. It involves manufacturing offcuts, deadstock, shipping, installation, maintenance, and what happens decades later when furniture is torn apart. According to the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides), environmental claims like “recyclable” need to be substantiated. You can't just call a fabric recyclable unless a recycling system is actually available to a meaningful share of its buyers.

The better question is: what does this fabric need to do in this specific room? A residential drapery can be perfect in viscose. A hotel banquette may need a polyester or blended construction with a high Martindale rub count. I've seen designers spend days arguing about natural versus synthetic and then miss the fact that the fabric's backing or finish is what determines its lifespan.

The Real Cost of a Wrong Spec

The worst part is that the waste doesn't show up as a landfill line item. It shows up as extra freight, reupholstery labor, lost revenue, and design hours.

I'll give you a hard example. A client once chose a budget-friendly polyester velvet because it was available in two days for a commercial project. I warned them that the abrasion test was below the level we'd specify for that use. We ordered anyway. Fourteen months later, a reupholsterer was tearing it off. The redo cost roughly $7,400, plus $1,200 in rush fees to get the right fabric there on time. The “cheap” fabric ended up being the most expensive fabric in the project.

That's when I implemented what I now call the 48-hour buffer policy. Any project that requires a fabric in under two weeks goes through a shortened version of the spec checklist before it becomes a rush order. If we can't verify performance, we don't jump.

How to Prevent Waste Before You Need Emergency Help

  • Start with the end use. Who will use this space, and how often?
  • Check the rub count. Residential sofas and hotel banquettes have different thresholds.
  • Ask what happens when it gets cleaned. A fabric that can't survive its own maintenance isn't sustainable.
  • Don't rely on a phone screen. Get a sample and see it in the room's light.
  • Question “waterproof.” Verify the test method and think about breathability.
  • Calculate total cost of ownership, not unit price.
