What Is Cotton Jersey Fabric? A Quality Inspector's Guide to Romo Textiles, Waterproof Soft Fabric, and Awnings

Here's the short version: cotton jersey is a soft, stretchy weft knit—not a waterproof soft fabric and not a structural awning substrate. If you're specifying a custom made fabric awning, cotton jersey should be near the bottom of your list unless it's coated, seam-taped, and tested as a complete assembly. I'm a quality manager at Romo Textiles. I review roughly 200 decorative fabric and wallcovering lines a year, and in 2024 I've rejected about 4% of first deliveries because the physical sample didn't match the technical data sheet. The single most common cause? Confusing a soft knit with an engineered fabric.

What is cotton jersey fabric?

Cotton jersey is a weft-knit construction, not a woven one. A single yarn is looped continuously in horizontal rows, which creates a smooth face and a textured back. That loop structure gives jersey its stretch and drape. It's the same construction as a classic T-shirt. When cotton is used, the fabric is breathable and absorbent, which is why it works so well for apparel and relaxed interiors.

But that same structure has limits. Because the loops move under stress, cotton jersey has lower dimensional stability than a woven twill or a tightly constructed canvas. It can stretch out of shape over time—especially at seats, elbows, and along piped seams. It also absorbs moisture. Plain cotton jersey won't act as a waterproof soft fabric.

A common assumption is that jersey is “cheap” because T-shirts are cheap. The causation actually runs the other way: low-grade jersey is cheap to produce at scale, but a well-made cotton jersey (fine yarn count, high GSM, low shrinkage) costs more than a basic woven poly-cotton. Don't confuse a construction type with a quality level.

For knit fabrics, I always look at bursting strength rather than flat tensile. According to ASTM D3786, a rubber diaphragm is expanded against the fabric to measure how much pressure the loops can absorb before bursting. That's more relevant for jersey than a simple grab test, and it's a quick way to separate a soft fabric that lasts from one that will tear at a seam.

“Waterproof soft fabric” is a spec, not a fabric type

When someone asks me for a waterproof soft fabric, I ask: waterproof on which side, under what pressure, and with which seams? A single-layer textile is rarely waterproof on its own. Waterproofness comes from a coating, a laminate, or a dense weave combined with a durable water-repellent finish. The softness comes from fiber denier, the finish, or the coating being on the back rather than the face.

I've tested a coated jersey that felt soft and passed a hydrostatic head test at 3,000 mm. Once it was stitched with a standard lockstitch and no seam tape, it leaked through the needle holes in under 40 minutes. The fabric wasn't the problem; the assembly was. Honestly, if a supplier says “waterproof soft fabric,” ask for the test method and the number. AATCC TM 22 grades water repellency from 0 to 100; 100 means no wetting. If they give you vague marketing instead of a test report, that's a red flag.

What a custom made fabric awning actually needs

A custom made fabric awning is not a panel of fabric. It's an outdoor system: framework, tension, seam patterns, hem channels, fasteners, and the textile itself. The fabric might be only about half the total cost. The rest is engineering.

For awnings, I look for materials that hold shape in wind, resist UV for years, and keep water out at the seams. That usually means solution-dyed acrylic canvas, PVC-coated polyester, or a similar outdoor composite. The yarn is dyed before weaving, so the color runs through the fiber rather than sitting on the surface. It's a different world from cotton jersey.

Cotton jersey fails on almost every one of those requirements: it stretches unevenly under tension, absorbs water, dries slowly, and has weak tear resistance when wet. If the softness of a waterproof soft fabric is your top priority, there are coated fabrics that feel soft and still meet a specific hydrostatic head. But don't buy a jersey and hope it behaves like an awning membrane on a windy Wednesday.

This is where I see the budget trap. People assume the fabric is what makes a custom made fabric awning expensive. It's the opposite. The fabric is a fraction of the cost. The expensive parts are pattern drafting, seam taping, wind-load engineering, and installation. A low-priced fabric might sound like a no-brainer, but it's not if the seams leak or the frame flutters. I calculated the worst case for one project: a redo in 18 months, a larger invoice, and an unhappy client. The best case was a small saving on fabric. The expected value said “specify properly,” and that's what we did.

Romo Textiles: how I check fabric quality in the real world

In Q2 2024, I rejected a 1,100-meter outdoor wallcovering delivery because roll width varied by 3 cm between the first and last rolls. The material didn't need to be a waterproof soft fabric; it needed to be consistent.

The latest Romo fabrics I've reviewed reflect an honest approach: tactile, soft materials exist alongside more structured ones. Knitted textures appear in cushions, throws, and relaxed window drapery. The structural and outdoor fabrics are woven or coated constructions. That's not a sales line; it's engineering. A stretchy knit can be beautiful, but if you put it on a dining bench that seats four people daily, you'll see bagging at the seams and a cushion that looks tired by month six.

I'm not going to tell you every Romo product is perfect. Our own lines have failed in the field when specified for the wrong job. A velvet in a family room with pets will still show wear. A jersey curtain will droop if it hangs in direct sun. The product isn't lying; the application is wrong. The bottom line: choose the construction based on the conditions, not just the handfeel.

When cotton jersey is actually the right choice

Cotton jersey isn't bad. It's mis-specified. It belongs in projects where softness, breathability, and stretch matter more than rigidity and waterproofing. In a residential interior, I'd use it for:

  • Decorative pillows and throws in low-abrasion spaces
  • Relaxed window drapery in dry, shaded rooms
  • Daybed covers where the texture is part of the look
  • Prototyping curved shapes before cutting an expensive woven

What I wouldn't do is put it on a contract dining chair, a custom made fabric awning, or anywhere it will face sustained rain. Those are woven or coated fabric jobs. Trust me on this one: if your supplier can't tell you the hydrostatic head, the seam construction, and the expected lifespan, a mock-up will answer more questions than a glossy swatch book. The fabric that feels best in your hand might be the wrong fabric on a rainy Tuesday. Trust the spec, not the texture.
